New Research Focus 2018
In 2018, the Census focuses its research on the approx. 1,850 drawings after antique sculpture in Italian collections of the early 18th century, which were commissioned by the retired English lawyer and politician Richard Topham (1671–1730), executed by a considerable number of Italian artists hired by Topham’s agents on site, and preserved until today in their original order and form at Eton College Library. The project aims firstly on analysing the genesis of the drawings collection as well as on the artistic and documentary aspects of the drawings; and secondly on their comprehensive entry into the scholarly database of the Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance.
