Alonso Chacón (†1599), known by his Latinised name Alphonsus Ciacconius, was a Spanish antiquarian and scholar active in Rome. Ciacconius planned the publication of several volumes of an illustrated antiquarian compendium referred to as the Antiquitates Romanae. The work was never published and now Ciacconius’s compilations of drawings after sculpture, of inscriptions, and of antiquarian texts have been dispersed. They partially survive in several different albums, and what is now known of Ciacconius’s antiquarian corpus survives in three different codices:

Ciacconius has been the subject of recent research, thanks to the rediscovery of the Braunschweig album and to the multi-year project Die Antikenalben des Alphonsus Ciacconius, led by Professor Dr. Christiane Vorster at the Universität Bonn. An upcoming conference in Rome will explore the results of her research project:
